About this tool

A PDF can be too large for an upload form even when it looks simple. The cause may be high-resolution scans, embedded images, fonts, duplicate objects or a scanner that saved every page as a photo. This tool offers two honest paths: a strong mode that rebuilds pages as images, and a clean mode that preserves the existing text and rewrites the file more efficiently.

How to reduce a PDF

Read moreShow less
  1. Add one or more PDFs. The tool accepts up to five files at a time, with the per-file limit shown above the drop zone.
  2. Choose a target. Pick a common upload limit or enter a custom byte size. A target is a ceiling, not a promise. A dense scan may not fit without becoming unreadable.
  3. Pick a mode. Strong mode rasterises each page and rebuilds the PDF. It usually makes scans much smaller, but the result is an image-only PDF: text is no longer selectable or searchable. Clean mode keeps the document structure and text, and may produce a smaller file by rewriting metadata and object streams; the reduction is often modest.
  4. Start compression. The tool tries a quality and resolution search, then reports the result. If the target is missed, it tells you the closest size instead of claiming success.
  5. Check the output. Open the downloaded PDF, zoom in on small text, check every page and confirm that signatures, stamps and form fields still look right. Keep the original.

Strong mode: smaller, but not always better

Read moreShow less

Strong mode renders each page at a chosen resolution and encodes the page as a JPEG before rebuilding the PDF. This is effective for scanned documents because it removes the original full-resolution images and replaces them with one controlled image per page. It is a poor choice for a text document you need to search, copy from or submit to an accessibility review.

The tool starts at a useful resolution and lowers it only when the target requires it. Lower resolution can make small print mushy. A very small target may be technically reachable but practically unusable. The result panel gives you the size, not a quality score. You have to look at the pages.

Clean mode: keep the text

Clean mode uses the original PDF objects, removes some metadata and saves with object streams. It can help when a portal rejects a file for size but the document is mostly text. It will not turn a 20 MB scan into a 200 KB file. If clean mode does not reach the target, use strong mode only after checking whether searchable text matters for your submission.

Limits and compatibility

  • Encrypted PDFs: a password-protected file must be unlocked before it can be processed. The tool does not ask for or store a password.
  • Forms and signatures: flattening a page to an image can destroy fillable fields and digital signatures. Use clean mode or a different workflow when those matter.
  • Links and bookmarks: strong mode does not preserve interactive links, bookmarks or tags. Clean mode aims to keep the existing document structure, but always check the result.
  • Colour and print: JPEG encoding can shift fine colour detail. Check a printed copy if the document will be printed.
  • File size: the per-file and batch limits are stated in the interface. Huge or complex PDFs can be slow on a phone.

The PDF is read and rebuilt in this browser. The file is not uploaded to OmniEmu by this tool. Working copies exist in the tab’s memory and are released when you reset or close it. The page still makes ordinary requests for its HTML, CSS, JavaScript and the PDF engine; those requests do not contain the document. Download the result before closing the tab.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the target fail?

Read moreShow less

The document may contain complex images, many pages or content that does not compress well at a readable quality. The tool will not silently produce a broken file just to hit a number. Try clean mode, a higher target, fewer pages or reducing the source images before making the PDF.

Will the text still be selectable?

Read moreShow less

In clean mode, usually yes, subject to the original file. In strong mode, no: the pages are images. If you need searchable text, do not use strong mode.

Can it compress a scanned document?

Read moreShow less

Yes, strong mode is designed for scans, but the result depends on the scan quality and the target. A 300 DPI colour scan may need a lower resolution to fit a very small limit. Check that the smallest text is still readable.

Does it remove metadata?

Read moreShow less

Clean mode removes some document metadata. Strong mode creates a new file from rendered pages. Neither is a dedicated metadata sanitiser, and metadata can exist in page images or attachments. Do not rely on this tool for anonymous submission without checking the output.

Can I process several PDFs?

Read moreShow less

Yes, up to the stated file limit. Each file gets its own result and can be downloaded separately. The ZIP option packages the results after they are created.
